What is Dye
- Plastic toys for children
- Fabrics worn
- From products like food
- Wood items
These are hardly any industries left where dyes are not used commercially. As a coloring substance, dye has an ionizing and aromatic organic compound that affinity to substrate to which it is being applied. Generally being applied in aqueous solution, it may need mordant to improve fastness of dye on fibers.
The support from dyes assists in :-
- Easily manipulating things according to our liking like at basic level, use color in identifying individual components of tissue sections
- Dyes are applied to substrates like textiles, plastic, paper, food
- These are also completely/partially soluble in which these are put to.
What makes Dyes colored ?
These Chromophores make dyes highly effective in their ability to absorb radiation. Further, Chromophores also act by making necessary energy changes in de-localized electron cloud of dye that invariably results in compound absorbing radiation within visible range of colors (not outside it).
Electrons may result in loss of color with their removal causing rest of electrons to revert to local orbits. A good example of this is Schiff's reagent; a sulphurous acid that reacts with Pararosaniline. This leads to Sulphonic group attaching itself to compound's central carbon atom which hampers conjugated double bond system of Quinoid ring. It causes electrons to become localized and as a result ring ceases to be Chromophore, thus rendering dye colorless.
How can colors of Dyes be altered ?

Colour Index
Color index was prepared in U.K. by the Society of Dyers and Colorists, while in USA it was prepared by American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists. With rise in the system of Color Indexing, many confusions that earlier were associated with naming and colors of Dyes as well as Pigments have been effectively sorted out.
In general terms, dye is referred by a simple name or common that can be easily comprehended by people who work with them. But here one issue arise that dyes may have names that are more than one. For example, basic fuchsia which earlier was known as magenta and light green that is popularly used to refer to dye methyl green. With some of these names being historical, there might be instances where for selling single compound, different manufacturers use different names so as to avoid issues related to copyright or trademarks.
Color Index - Introduction:
Color index also has system for assigning specific names (CI Names) for each of dyes so as to avoid confusion regarding chemicals. These names were given based upon dye's:
- Mode of behavior
- Base color
- Action
For example, CI name given for chromoxane cyanine R (CI 43820) is Mordant Blue 3. Thus, CI name provides specific way to identify a dye. Although CI names are used less often than CI numbers, CI names play a useful part in identifying a dye for particular staining method.
Following table illustrates use of Color Index for yellow Organic pigment:
C.I. Generic Name | C.I. Number | CAS Number | Color |
P.Y.17 | 21105 | 4541-49-1 | Greenish Yellow |
P.Y.74 | 11741 | 6358-31-2 | Bright greenish yellow |
P.Y.81 | 21127 | 22094-93-5 | Lemon yellow shade |
Features of Color Index:
Detailed record of products which can be found in market is put under Color Index reference. Here, for each product’s name, there is listing of:
- Manufacturer's name
- Principal usages
- Physical form
- Comments to help customers
The format is devised after taking into confidence coloration industry that include prominent:
- Manufacturers
- Users
- CPMA
- ETAD
Colorants get listed in Color Index strictly in accordance with system of:
- Color Index Generic Names Color
- Index Constitution Numbers
Today, around 27,000 individual products are listed under total of 13,000 Color Index Generic Names. These are listed with chemical structures that are depicted in accordance with results obtained by modern researches on molecular conformation. Further, a popular format has been devised with a unique 'fingerprint' concept. Here, Part 1 of information gets freshly confirmed with suppliers and manufacturers and Part 2 of information is either confirmed freshly with suppliers & manufacturers or is depicted as "carried over from previous edition.
Application Areas of Color Index:
- Textile manufacturers
- Paint manufacturers & suppliers
- Colorant users, suppliers & manufacturers
- Manufacturers and suppliers of Plastics

Glossary
Acid Dye - It is applied to polyamide fibers from acidic solutions. Essentially a synthetic dye, it is used for dyeing of silk, wool and nylon.
Affinity - In dyeing field, affinity means preferential attraction of dye towards fiber other than for solution of dye bath. With dye having strong affinity, it easily leaves dye solution of dispersion and gets attached to fiber that is put for dyeing process.
Aniline - Aniline is commonly used term in synthesis of dyes. With chemical formula of C6H7N, it is known as aniline oil and finds usage as a synonym for synthetic dyes.
Azo - Azo refers to chemical compound containing double nitrogen atoms with double bond between them (-N=N-). These dyes form largest group of dyes and display stability, strength, light-fastness and also respond well to mixing. Azo dyes can be found among dye classes of direct, acid, basic, reactive and disperse.
B
Basic Dye - Generally Basic dyes are cationic dyes that are able to react with acidic groups on fibers.
Bi-Functional Reactive Dye - These dyes have in them the potential to react with fiber in more than a single way.
Binder - It is a colorless material which is used to attach pigment to fabric. Binders act like "glues" and help in holding the pigment in place. Some popular examples include paints that have pigments mixed with binders.
C
Cation - it is a positively charged ion. A large number of chemicals that find application in textile processing are referred as cationic.
Cellulose - It is a polymer comprising of large numbers of units with each having general formula represented by C6H10O5.
Chromophore - It is a color-bearing compound that has special properties which is found in organic molecule that makes it appear colored.
Colour Index - It is a publication that is jointly introduced by Society of Dyers and Colorists of Great Britain and American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists.
Chrome - It is any salt of chromium which finds usage in tanning and dyeing process.
D
Direct Application - It’s a method which is used for describing process where solution of dye is locally applied to different fabric areas like painting, squirting, spraying, stamping
Direct Dye - It is a dye which is carried out by immersing fiber in dye solution without any need of other chemicals for bonding dye to fibers.
Disperse Dye - These dyes are found in dye bath as kind of suspension/dispersion of microscopic particles and have only a minuscule amount in true solution at any given moment of time.
E
Enzyme - These are type of protein that are presently popularly used in the field of textile processing. These perform role of catalyst in biochemical reaction. Some of popular examples include Amylase - applied for de-sizing and Cellulose - Used in modification of cellulosic fabrics.
Exhaust Dyeing - This type of dyeing finds usage in denoting application of dye bath of moderately larger liquor to goods ratio in a situation where fiber is immersed for a while. It allows dye molecules to exit bath and get attached to fibers.
Global Dyestuff Industry
- Chemicals
- Textiles
- Leather
- Plastics
- Paints
- Paper
- Printing inks
- Pharmaceuticals
Comparing with the growth chart of the industry a half a decade or more back, today, the market size for dyes, pigments and intermediaries has grown many folds. With the global dyestuff production estimated to be around 34 million tons (with annual global sales of textile dyestuff alone aggregating $ 6 billion), it would not be wrong to say that the industry is rising to its potential. The shift of the industry’s major production centers from west to east to Asia over past 20 years or so has been made possible because of primarily two reasons:
- The lower costs of production in Asia region
- Growing prominence as hub for global textile industry
Today, the markets for dyes are predominantly dominated by reactive as well as disperse dyes and in future also these two types of dyes are expected to grow further. With nations like China, South Korea and Taiwan emerging as strong players in field of disperse dyes, India has taken lead in production of reactive dyes as the availability of an intermediate called vinyl sulphone in the country.
Major market Players:
Today, China's share in world market is estimated to be around 25%. Further, the complete group of China, Taiwan, India, Japan and Pakistan are among major dyestuff producing countries in the world. But, when it comes to volumes of market share, Europe is the leader. This has been possible due to its alliance towards specialty products.
Industry’s Major Challenges:
With global market share of Indian dyes industry lying between 5 - 7% (continuously increasing year by year), some of the major challenges that are faced by the Global Dyestuff Industry include:
Environmental Impact:
Today, the thrust has shifted towards using environment friendly natural dyes. With many countries laying curbs against harmful dyes, the industry can prosper only if dyes are not hazardous and are environment friendly in nature. A welcome step taken in this direction is banning of Azo dyes in Europe along with closure of units.
Support of the Government and Trade Association:
It is well understood that any industry that moves ahead requires back-end support of government as well as trade associations. This aids in promoting the industry in other countries in terms of allocation of investments as well as other supports. Hence, these associations should be active participants in promoting technology institutes that are engaged in research activities so that better range of products can be made available in the market.
Problem of Over Capacity But Falling Margins:
With both China and India having high potential in terms of dye production capacity, the shifting of manufacturing bases from Europe and other industrialized nations to this new market is the cause for volatility in market that in turn is affecting prices.
Fierce competition:
Because of shift of companies from West to East, it has resulted in concentration of all companies in Asian region that has created intense competition in global market.
